Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
